Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about fun diving in Tioman Island, answered.
What is a Fun Dive in Tioman Island?
A fun dive is a recreational scuba dive for certified divers (Open Water or above). Unlike training dives, fun dives let you explore Tioman's coral reefs, rocky outcrops, and vibrant marine ecosystems at your own pace with a certified dive guide. Tioman Dive Buddy offers guided boat dives across more than 20 dive sites around the island, including remote sites like Tokong Burung and Chebeh Island.
Who can join the Tioman Fun Dive?
Anyone holding a valid Open Water Diver certification (or equivalent) from a recognised agency such as PADI, SSI, or NAUI can join. You must be at least 12 years old and medically fit for diving. If you haven't dived in 12 months or more, a refresher dive or Scuba Review session is recommended before joining fun dives to ensure comfort and safety underwater.
How many dives are included in a Fun Dive package?
The number of dives depends on your package duration. A 2D1N package includes 2 afternoon dives. A 3D2N package includes 6 dives. The most popular 4D3N package includes 8 dives. The 5D4N and 6D5N packages include 10 and 12 dives respectively. Each full dive day consists of 2 morning boat dives and 2 afternoon boat dives. Additional à la carte dives can be added at RM100 per dive (minimum 2 per session).
Do I need to bring my own diving equipment?
Basic dive equipment is included in every package: wetsuit, dive mask (prescription and non-prescription available), diving fins, weights, and weight belt. BCD and regulator are available for rental at RM60 per day if you don't have your own. You're welcome to bring personal gear if you prefer.
What marine life can I see during Tioman Fun Dives?
Tioman Island is a marine park with rich biodiversity. Common sightings include reef sharks, green and hawksbill sea turtles, giant clams, barracuda, nudibranchs, moray eels, clownfish, cuttlefish, and stingrays. The coral gardens are home to hundreds of species of hard and soft corals. During the right conditions, lucky divers may spot whale sharks and eagle rays at deeper sites.
Are Fun Dives suitable for beginner divers?
Yes — fun dives are open to all certified divers, including those who have recently completed their Open Water certification. Tioman has several beginner-friendly dive sites with calm currents and shallow depths between 10 and 18 metres. Dive guides will pair you with a group suited to your experience level so you can dive comfortably and build confidence.
How deep are Fun Dives in Tioman?
Most fun dive sites in Tioman range from 10 to 25 metres in depth. Open Water certified divers are limited to a maximum depth of 18 metres, while Advanced Open Water divers may reach 30 metres depending on the site and current conditions. Your dive guide will always plan dives within safe limits for your certification level.
Is a refresher dive required if I haven't dived recently?
If you haven't dived for 12 months or longer, a refresher dive (also called a Scuba Review) is strongly recommended. This short session covers fundamental skills like mask clearing, regulator recovery, and buoyancy control so you feel confident and safe before heading out on the boat. Talk to TDB ahead of your trip to arrange a refresher if needed.
When is the best season for Fun Diving in Tioman?
The best season for diving in Tioman is from March to November. During this period, water visibility typically ranges from 10 to 30 metres, with the clearest conditions occurring between April and September. Water temperatures stay warm at 27–30°C year-round during the dive season. Tioman Island closes from December to February due to the northeast monsoon.
Are boat transfers included in the Fun Dive package?
All dive-site boat transfers during your dives are included in the package price. However, the ferry from the mainland (Mersing or Tanjung Gemuk jetty) to Tioman Island is not included. Round-trip ferry tickets cost approximately RM120 and above and must be purchased separately. A RM5 marine park fee is also collected at the jetty by government officials.
